Inter- and Intra-Solver Parallelism for Coupled Multi-Physics Simulations

Benjamin Uekermann, Technische Universität München,
Miriam Mehl, University of Stuttgart

We consider the surface coupling of highly parallel solvers to a multi-physics simulation. To maintain a decent overall scalability, we face two challenges that we will discuss during this talk. First, the data transfer between two solvers, needs to avoid all-to-all communications. This means that we have to construct a communication scheme that exploits the local structure at the coupling interfaces. Second, only a coupling scheme that allows to solve all physical solvers at the same time, can overcome scalability limitations due to cost-asymmetries between the solvers. We present such coupling schemes, including a fully-implicit one.
